Are you a construction site manager? Maybe you’re planning an event for hundreds or thousands of people?

If you intend to have people around a worksite or venue, you need ablutions. Porta potties offer you a convenient way to bring facilities onto any site.

Let’s unpack everything you need to know about how to rent a porta potty or porta-john.

Different Types of Porta Potties for Different Needs

Porta potties are available in a variety of configurations to suit your needs. Here are the three most common options found at events and job sites across America.

Standard Porta Potties

The standard porta potty model offers you the best value for money. This unit is the typical porta-john you find around most job sites and venues.

These single-person units typically have no flushing capacity, no sink, or amenities. You get a 60-gallon holding tank, making them suitable for short-term use.

ADA Wheelchair Accessible Porta Potties

ADA and OHSA regulations require you to have at least one handicap-accessible porta-potty at a venue. These models have a larger footprint to accommodate wheelchairs, as well as disability ramps.

An ADA-approved model also features handrails around the unit’s interior to help disabled individuals navigate their way to the toilet.

Restroom Trailers

A restroom trailer is the luxury porta potty option. These models come in various configurations, with a design that makes them feel more like a bathroom than a porta-john.

These models are suitable for special events, with up to four stalls and two wash sinks. Some models come with extras like lighting, running water, mirrors, and more.

Deluxe Flushable Porta Potties

These models offer you a porta potty with flushing capabilities, as well as a urinal, sinks, mirrors, and wash sinks.

Typically, they look like a standard unit but with a slightly larger footprint to accommodate the sink and a larger tank.

Other Luxury Portable Bathrooms

The luxury portable bathroom is similar to a trailer model but with more facilities and better finishes. They’re a good choice for movie sets and special events where you need complete bathroom services for VIPs.

You’ll get finishes like sinks and towel holders, counters, flushing toilets, lighting, and even air conditioning in the unit.

How Many Porta Potties Do You Need?

Planning your event and calculating the number of porta potties you need depends on how many employees or attendees you expect at the job site or event.

Typically, you’ll need around one porta potty for every ten people on the premises, according to OSHA and ADA rules. The duration of your event also plays a role in determining how many porta potties you need at your event.

For most job sites and event locations, you’ll need two porta-johns for every 50 people attending an eight-hour event.

With this calculation in mind, we can estimate that you’ll need around 72 porta-johns for a 10-hour event with more than 10,000 attendees.

Prepare the Placement of Your Portable Toilet Rental

The placement of your porta potty is also another critical consideration when planning your event. Typically, you’ll need to use a dry and level surface with a central location that makes it easy for people to find.

It’s important to make the access to your porta potties suitable for all attendees from any location in the venue or job site. Locate the areas in your venue with the highest foot traffic volumes, and allocate them for setting up your porta-johns.

Ensure you set up the porta-potties so they are the required distance from your food court. The last thing you need is odors floating towards these areas.

If you’re setting up a porta-potty location in the winter, make sure you salt the ground before installation.

You’ll also need to allow for 45-feet of space around your porta potties to account for the space required by the service truck.

Scheduling Your Porta Potty and Billing Cycles

If you’re hosting a summer event, you can expect demand for porta potties to be high during this time of year. As a result, you’ll need to book your porta potty between six to four weeks in advance. Attempting to book your service a few weeks out could result in disappointment.

If you’re purchasing porta potty rental for a weekend, you’re going to end up paying more than if you take a long-term contract for a few months. Weekend events require payment upfront for booking, delivery, and servicing.

However, long-term rentals usually include servicing charges with a  more affordable cost. With long-term rentals, you get weekly servicing of your units, including sanitation, interior cleaning, and restocking of consumables.

You can expect to pay anywhere from $175 to $500 monthly, with costs determined by the venue’s location, the distance from the rental agency, and special considerations.

When you arrange a long-term contract with a provider, they’ll set you up with a weekly or monthly billing cycle to suit your needs.

Getting Your Porta Potty Serviced and Other Products

If you’re hosting a weekend event, you won’t need any servicing of your porta-potties, and the provider includes site and waste removal in the costs of the service. If you have a long-term contract, your provider will service the unit once a week.

You also have options for additional services and features included in your porta potty. Some of the extra features you can order include handwashing stations, hand sanitizer stations, heaters, portable mist fans, and hot-water sinks.
